Maria took this opportunity to not only honor Heidi, but to teach her 7 year old son JP. He was asking questions about two characters in his cartoon who are seemingly very different, but end up sitting down and having a cup of tea together. Maria explained the importance of coming from a place of kindness and sitting down to talk things out and get to know each other. They then purchased a "cup of tea" from Starbucks and talked to this man about his life.
Watching kids learn about homelessness is interesting, but teaching them to be kind even moreso. They often ask where the person's mommy and daddy are and why they don't have a room. If kids are our future, this is was an excellent teachable moment.
